Ms. Essig's Nursery Class

                      Kristin Essig

I am so excited to begin my 9th year teaching Nursery at St. Edward! I am a NYS certified teacher with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood and Childhood Education from Hofstra University.  I received my Master's degree in Literacy from Hofstra University as well.

I feel that a Nursery classroom should make a child feel welcomed and safe.  I do my best to create an environment where children grow and thrive as whole learners.  I love working with my energetic three year olds each day!

Clothing and Supplies
1. Uniforms are required for all children in our Early Childhood Program.  Please do not make any alterations to the uniform.  Please no head bands or jewelry including dangling earrings.
2.     If you are purchasing a new fall or winter coat, please make sure it is easy for your child to put on independently.  Bulky jackets with removable inner linings are frustrating. Please also look for a jacket with a loop so your child can hang it on a hook.
3. All children MUST wear rubber soled shoes or sneakers.  We will be going outside every day, weather permitting.  No flip flops, clogs, party shoes, crocs, rain boots, or snow boots.  This is a safety issue.
4. Even if it is raining, please do not send your child to school with an umbrella.  This is a safety issue.
5. Please be sure your child has a complete change of clothing (socks included) stored in a zip lock bag.  Label all articles of clothing, as well as, the bag.
6. Please do not allow your child to bring toys from home to school.

All students in our Early Childhood Program are required to have a school issued schoolbag.  The cost is $15.00.  Please send payment in an envelope with your child’s name on it on the first day of school (cash only please).

Please send your child to school with his/her school bag each day.  This will be one of our ways to communicate with you regarding our school and class activities.  Please check the schoolbag each day, empty your child’s folder and send back any correspondence in their folder.  Please do not have your child put toys from home in their schoolbag.

Super Person of the Day
This is a very special day for your child.  They will be performing many special duties for the class such as leading the line, holding the flag, etc.  They will also be providing snack for the entire class.  Your super person day will be listed on the monthly calendar which will be sent home with your child.  If your child will not be in school on his/her super person day, please arrange to switch with a classmate.  A list of suggested healthy snack can be found on our class website.

Please let me know if your child has any food allergies.  If your child has a food allergy, please send some snacks that can be served to your child in the event that someone brings in something your child is allergic to.

Your child may also bring in one item from home on their super person day for Show and Tell.  When we begin our alphabet study, your child may bring in two or three items that correspond with the letter of the week.  No weapons or super-heroes please.

Extended day children will be eating lunch in school.  Please pack a healthy lunch (including a drink) for your child in a soft lunch box.

Raw vegetables, hotdogs, popcorn, grapes and raisins are NOT permitted because they are a choking hazard.  Peanut butter and nut products are NOT permitted due to allergies.

Birthdays are important in the lives of young children.  We will try our best to schedule your child to be “Super Person” on their birthday.  You may bring in a birthday snack (cupcakes or ice-cream, NO birthday cakes please), juice or milk and a goody bag or party favor if you choose, for each child in the class.

Your child will receive a birthday crown, and they may also bring in their favorite story, which will be read to the class at story time.
