ELA
We focus on reading, writing, language, and speaking/listening.
Reading
Writing
Language
Speaking/Listening
Children participate in conversation and learn appropriate speaking/listening rules (raise their hand, wait to be called on, listen to the speaker)
Social Studies
Our students begin to develop a sense of time and place as they encounter classic tales, make their own calendars, and draw maps of their neighborhoods. Multicultural awareness is explored through community connections and a developing sense of good citizenship.
Science
Students engage in observations of the natural world, express themselves through painting and crafts, and conduct inquiries into topics related to their healthy development. Each child receives the opportunity to present a science experiment for the class.
Religion
Second Grade is an exciting year for our students as they learn about and receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Our school community attends weekly Mass to enrich our Catholic Identity. This provides the Second Grade students with opportunities to enhance their Christian living environment as well as provide examples of Sacramental fulfillment.Math
The Into Math textbook is based on the NYS Core Curriculum and includes Geometry (2 and three-dimensional shapes), Measurement and Data(time, money, graphs), Number and Operations in base ten and Operations(place value), and Algebraic Thinking (addition and subtraction). Manipulatives, technology, and interactive activities extend the learning concepts for the students while promoting math as an everyday tool.
Technology
The use of technology is ever-present in our classroom setting. From the extensive use of SmartBoard technology, IPads, desktop computers as well as Twitter, the students develop skills to exchange information within our current culture.
Science, Social Studies and Technology
3rd graders are given the opportunity to explore their interests in science and social studies with an emphasis on research· and experiment-based learning. These studies are enhanced with the help of our technology lab and interactive media. Within our area of study, 3rd graders choose to research topics that interest them. Students then present what they have learned in a variety of formats.
Religion
Students understand the importance of our school motto "pray, study and serve." We encourage our students to explore their relationship with Jesus through prayer. We find opportunities to spread joy and happiness throughout our school and church community. These connections and friendships are what our 3rd graders love most about St. Edward's!
Science
The rigorous science curriculum in 4th grade is based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The program is rich in content and practice, allowing for student-led learning, discovery, and exploration. Students use an evidence-based, hands-on approach to apply science to the world around them. Using STEM (Science /Technology I Engineering/Math) strategies, students engage in weekly science labs to explore new concepts. Collaborative work and project-based learning help students apply the scientific method to think more deeply about core science concepts like physics, chemistry, states of matter, and sustainability as we focus on preserving God's gift: our planet.
Social Studies
The social studies curriculum focuses on where we live at this momentNew York! Through a wide range of resources, students learn about the history, geography, people, and events that have shaped our state into current times. Fiction and nonfiction literature, as well as tablets, computers, primary resources, and secondary resources guide our thinking and learning. Through the classroom environment, students explore and practice characteristics of citizenship.
Religion
Our Catholic faith is the foundation upon which we build each child's character and Catholic identity. We attend weekly Mass as a school community and pray together throughout the day. Students ponder and practice how to live like Jesus, how to grow as a Catholic community, and how to serve, using our God-given talents to help our neighbors and to care for God's creations and the Earth.
English Language Arts
In fourth grade, students are reading to learn, instead of learning to read. They practice reading from a variety of texts including informational texts and poems, and they learn the habits of good readers: to think metacognitively about what they are reading. The curriculum uses many strategies to strengthen skills in reading, writing, and comprehension. Students are engaged in small group work, centers, and guided reading, and they use chrome books to read, research, and become immersed in reading and language. Language arts skills affect every other subject, and our goal is a strong literacy foundation, creating 21st Century learners and global citizens. Students practice these skills in a variety of ways, including peer teaching, interactive notebooks, technology based book reports, and regular reading tests to chart growth and progress.
Math
Fourth grade math is a busy time of building upon previously learned concepts and mastering new ones, including fractions, geometry, measurement, number sense, as well as operations and algebraic thinking. Students explore these concepts through manipulatives, technology, and group work in weekly math stations. Students are engaged in real-life math problems and are encouraged to solve these problems in different ways and to explain their reasoning. Through data-driven instruction, lessons are individualized and differentiated to meet each child's needs.
